So originally I intended to buy book for book for my friend Asia’s birthday BUT it sounded so good I HAD to get myself a copy too (I’d almost bought it for myself prior to this).

The general synopsis of the novel, by Oyinkan Braithwaite, is that Korede’s sister Ayoola is a serial killer. She dates boys and, after a month or so, she kills them and asks Korede to help her cover it up. Ayoola twists the truth and makes it seem as though she is victim who has acted out of self-defence.

“I want to believe her. I want to believe it was out of self defence…. I mean the first time, I was furious”

The novel is so gripping! The chapters are only a couple pages long and are short little snippets of scenes. It makes it so easy to be like; “just one more chapter”, “oh go on, one more”, until you’ve read the whole book! I really struggled to put this book down. I finished it in 3 evenings.

I really enjoyed being from the perspective of the sister having an emotional and ethical struggle of whether to protect her sister or defend her victims. And despite the serious manner it’s actually very comical and light-hearted.

This novel was actually shortlisted for the Women’s prize for fiction 2019 and is deffo worthy of that. I’ve already lent this book to my friend Lily who I can guarantee will love it. If you’ve read or want to read it let me know in the comments.
